It’s virtually impossible to have grown up in a culture that generally has such vicious things to say about queer people and not to believe those things about ourselves. Because of this, even gay, lesbian, bisexual, transsexual, transgendered and two-spirited people may think that there’s something wrong with being queer. This internalized homophobia can leak out in both obvious and subtle ways. Countless young people have feared that they couldn’t have enduring relationships, raise children, or accomplish their goals. Even once we consciously begin to challenge those anti-queer beliefs, some still linger. As we become more aware of the misinformation we’ve been taught, we will gradually unlearn these negatives perceptions of ourselves and the queer community.
