Help Us to Answer the
Call!
The Lesbian Gay Bi Trans Youth Line is a vital service
that relies on the contribution of many volunteers.
The donation of time and talent by students, community
workers, new Canadians, retirees, business executives
and many others has helped ensure that we are able
to provide an understanding ear and important information
to isolated and at-risk youth throughout Ontario.
The Youth Line provides a province-wide free and
anonymous 1-800 number peer-support phone line for
lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, transgender,
2-spirited, queer and questioning youth.
In 2005, more than 50 volunteers will contribute more than
3,000 hours of service as phone line peer-supporters,
committee members, office assistants, event support
and Board members. The Youth Line owes its existence
to these volunteers! Come join the 6.5 million Canadians
who volunteer their time at non-profit agencies.
Why Volunteer?
Explore new challenges and gain work experience
or learn new skills.
Improve the quality of life in the LGBTQ community.
Meet new people and build your network of support.
Things To Consider:
How much time do I have to volunteer?
What personal and professional skills would I enjoy
sharing or like to develop?
Volunteer Opportunities
There are many ways to contribute to the Youth Line.
Volunteers of all ages are welcome. However, phone
line peer-support volunteers must be 26 years old
or younger.
Here is a sample of ongoing volunteer opportunities:
Phone Line Volunteers
Phone Line Volunteers are provided 40 hours of training
in preparation for handling calls from our youth
callers. Areas covered in the training include anti-oppression,
active and supportive listening, safe-sex info,
self-care and more. A supervisor is present for
all volunteer shifts to provide support.
The Board of Directors
The Board of Directors provides leadership for the
Youth Line by setting the goals and priorities of
the organization in consultation with staff and
volunteers and is legally responsible for the organization.
Board members are expected to commit to 5-8 hours
per month for a minimum of one year. Training and
teamwork seminars are provided. As a youth organization
serving a diverse community, we strongly encourage
youth and members of minority groups to become Board
members.
Provincial Outreach Ambassadors
Provincial Outreach Ambassadors are the Youth Line's eyes,
ears, hands, and feet across the province. Responsible for ensuring outreach materials
reach community organizations, recruiting volunteers/members/donors, and reaching out
to their communities these special volunteers ensure that youth across the province can
access our service.
Committee Volunteers
Committee Volunteers assist staff and Board members
in the planning, implementation and evaluation of
a variety of committees including financial development,
policy, service and special events.
Special Project Volunteers
Special Project Volunteers contribute in a variety
of ways. These volunteer opportunities are often
shorter term project-based tasks ranging from research,
events planning, mail-out team, newsletter production
and writing, data entry, outreach and more. Contact
the Youth Line for information on current projects.
